  • Notes
    • Inscription on tombstone reads "8th of Silver Moon No. 87 F. & A.M." This means that LM Moch was an 8th Degree Mason of the Silver Moon No. 87 of the Free and Amended Masons. Silver is associated with the moon in Masonic tradition and in Vermont there were a number of "Silver Moon" lodges that used that term to meet on nights when there was a full moon to facilitate easy travel to the meetings at night. To have such a inscription on his memorial indicated that he was proud of his fraternal position in the order. No. 87 is confirmed to have been in Keithville, LA.
    • It appears that Louis Morgan did not have a close relationship to his father or mother and had a complicated childhood being a child during the Civil War in the Deep South. I can find no record of any other Moch's in Caddo Parish, except for Marx Moch, a local merchant. However, Marx did not arrive in America until 1860.

He seems to have two half-siblings, Gill and Mary Wilson who are older than Louis and were born in Alabama as was his mother. Louis was born in Louisiana however and we don't know how his mother and half-siblings got to Louisiana.

In the 1870 Census, Louis appears to be living with his half-brother Gill. Mary seems to have married Peter Connor. Peter and Mary Connor had a son, Ananias, who was boarding with Louis according to the 1900 census. Ananias would be Louis' nephew.
